There are two honest ways to install Magic Set Editor on Windows, and which one you need depends on which version you chose. The community integrated package is extract-and-run. The author’s GitHub release is a two-part job: program first, templates second. Skipping the second part is the single most common installation problem, so this guide treats it as part of the install, not an optional extra.
Before you start: do not use Program Files
Install or extract Magic Set Editor into a folder you can write to — for example a folder on your Desktop or in your Documents — and not into C:\Program Files. This warning comes from the project’s own old official site, preserved in a forum quotation of that page: from Windows XP SP3 onward, Program Files is read-only for normal programs, which caused errors when Magic Set Editor tried to save there. The same advice still applies to today’s portable and integrated packages: put the whole folder somewhere writable and keep it there.
Path A — Community integrated package (simplest)
- Download a community 2.5.8 package via our download page — the standard variant is the one its downloads page recommends for new users.
- Extract the zip into a writable folder (see the warning above). Do not run it from inside the zip.
- Open the extracted folder and run
magicseteditor.exe(some packages also includemse.exe, which is the same program). - If the package includes a fonts folder, install its fonts as described under Path B, step 4 — several community packs bundle the fonts inside the same download.
That is the whole install for this path: there is no setup wizard, because the frames are already bundled.
Path B — GitHub 2.1.2 program plus a template pack (two parts)
Step 1 — Extract the program
Download magicseteditor-2.1.2-win64.zip (4,347,166 bytes; use the win32 zip on a 32-bit system) via the download page and extract it into a writable folder. Run the program once if you like — but expect an empty editor. The 2.1.2 zip contains the program only: no game templates, no fonts. That is how the author published it, not a broken download.
Step 2 — Download a template pack
Get a template pack from the community’s MagicSetEditorPacks project on GitHub — for Magic: The Gathering, the Full Magic Pack is the complete option and the M15 packs are smaller ones. Template packs are still actively updated, even though the program itself is final at 2.1.2.
Step 3 — Copy the data/ folder in
Extract the template pack and copy its data/ folder into your Magic Set Editor folder, alongside the program file. The pack’s own installation instructions describe exactly this: unpack, then copy data and the other included folders into the MSE folder. Restart the program and the templates will be available when you create a new set.
Step 4 — Install the fonts (select all)
In the template pack, open the Magic - Fonts folder, select every font file in it, right-click and choose Install. Do not skip this step and do not install only one or two: card titles and text are set in these fonts, and missing fonts make cards render in a fallback typeface. For non-Magic packs the folder is called Other - Fonts and is organised by game — open your game’s subfolder and install all of its .ttf and .otf files the same way.
Change the language (two separate settings)
Language in Magic Set Editor is set in two places, and changing only one leaves half the program in the old language:
- Interface language — on the welcome window shown at startup, choose your language (the template-pack documentation places this control on that welcome screen).
- Card language — in the Set info of your set, set the language for the cards themselves.
Installed, but no templates?
If the program opens but offers no card frames, you almost certainly installed the GitHub 2.1.2 program without a template pack. That is Path B without steps 2–4. Add a template pack as described above — copy in data/, install the fonts, restart — and the frames will appear. No reinstall of the program is needed.
