Which Magic Set Editor Version Should You Download? (2.0.0 vs 2.1.2 vs 2.5.8)

Magic Set Editor does not have one current download. It has three separate release lines, made by different people at different times, and they are not interchangeable. Picking the wrong one is the most common reason a new user ends up with an empty program and no card frames. This guide explains each line exactly as its source publishes it, then matches it to the kind of user it suits.

The three release lines at a glance

Release lineVersionDateFormTemplates included?

Community forum distribution (boards.net)2.5.8Release date not published on the downloads pageIntegrated community packages in four variantsYes — frames are bundled, depending on the variant

1. SourceForge 2.0.0 — the classic all-in-one installer (2011)

This is the last release published on SourceForge, the project’s original home. The main Windows file is mse-win32-2011-02-05-full.exe, an Inno Setup installer of 40,462,321 bytes. Its MD5, as published by SourceForge, is f5bf70b085afb4a8c099525bf2685ec8. A smaller reduced installer (13,592,826 bytes) also exists. Because the full package was built as an all-in-one installer, templates are included — you install it and you can start making cards.

The trade-off is age: this line dates from 2011, so newer card frames that appeared later are not in it.

2. GitHub 2.1.2 — the author’s last release, program only (2020)

The original author, Twan van Laarhoven, later moved the source code to GitHub. The newest release there is 2.1.2, dated 28 September 2020. It is not an installer at all: it is a portable zip containing only the program itself.

  • magicseteditor-2.1.2-win64.zip — 4,347,166 bytes (for 64-bit Windows) — download the author’s GitHub file via this link
  • magicseteditor-2.1.2-win32.zip — 3,867,112 bytes (for 32-bit Windows)

That small size is not a mistake. The 2.1.2 zip contains no game templates and no fonts. On its own it opens with nothing to design on. To use it you must also download a community template pack (from the MagicSetEditorPacks project on GitHub) and copy its data/ folder and fonts into the program folder — see our installation guide, linked below. Upstream development has stopped after 2.1.2, so this is the author’s final version, not an outdated copy of a newer one.

3. Community 2.5.8 — the integrated packages most new users actually run

Today the program is maintained by a dedicated fan community, whose home is magicseteditor.boards.net. Their community downloads page offers Magic Set Editor 2.5.8 in four variants, described on that page as follows:

  • Magic Set Editor 2.5.8 (standard) — with all M15 frames. Recommended for new users, in the page’s own words.
  • 2.5.8 Lite — with only the set-agnostic frames; a slim build.
  • 2.5.8 Advanced — with every Magic frame ever released; the page warns that the file is very large.
  • Non-Magic Set Editor 2.5.8 — with every non-Magic frame released.

These are integrated packages: program, frames and fonts are bundled so you can extract and run. We do not list file sizes or hashes for 2.5.8 here, because the community downloads page does not publish verified values we can check against — rather than invent numbers, we link you to that page itself via our download page.

Which one should you download?

  • New to Magic Set Editor? Start with the community standard 2.5.8 package. It is the variant its own downloads page recommends for new users, and it avoids the separate template step entirely.
  • Want the author’s original program? Download 2.1.2 from GitHub — and budget the extra step of installing a template pack and its fonts before you judge it. Without templates it will look broken; it is not, it is just incomplete on its own.
  • Prefer a classic installer, or working offline with one file? The SourceForge 2.0.0 full installer is a single self-contained setup file with templates included. Accept that its frames stop at its 2011 era.

Every route above starts from the same place: our download page, which lists each source separately so you know exactly where your file comes from.
