Magic Set Editor FAQ
Short, honest answers to the questions MSE users ask most. Every answer below is based on the project’s own distribution channels and documentation, and each one links to the full guide on this site. This is an independent fan resource — see the Disclaimer for details.
Which version should I download?
MSE has three separate distribution lines. New users usually want the community 2.5.8 packages from the community downloads page, because templates are already bundled. The author’s 2.1.2 (GitHub, 2020) is a small portable ZIP with the program only — templates and fonts must be added separately. The classic 2.0.0 (SourceForge, 2011) is an installer that bundles program and templates together. Full comparison: Which MSE version should you download? — downloads: Download page.
Is MSE safe?
MSE is free, open-source software, so its source code is public and inspectable. The safest route is to download only from the project’s own channels — the community downloads page, the author’s GitHub releases, SourceForge, or Flathub — rather than from random file hosts. Read the full reasoning: Is Magic Set Editor safe?
Is there a Mac version?
No. The project has never released a native macOS package — SourceForge 2.0.0 shipped Windows and Linux builds, and GitHub 2.1.2 ships Windows ZIPs only. On a Mac the realistic options are a compatibility layer such as Wine, or building from source. Honest walkthrough: Magic Set Editor for Mac.
Why are my templates missing?
Most often because the 2.1.2 program-only ZIP contains no game templates at all. Install a template pack: extract it and copy its data/ folder into your MSE folder, then restart the program. Step-by-step fixes: MSE templates not showing and the Templates hub.
Why do exports look blurry?
Export resolution is determined by the template you use — there is no HD switch and no DPI setting in the program. Older templates use lower-resolution artwork, so the practical fix is to design on a higher-resolution community template pack (such as the M15 packs). Details: Why MSE exports look blurry.
How do I change the language?
It is a two-step process: switch the interface language from the welcome window, and set the card language in the set information when you create a set. MSE translations exist for several languages, including Spanish. Guide: Change the language in Magic Set Editor.
Where do fonts come from?
Fonts ship inside the template packs, in a Magic - Fonts/ folder (or game subfolders inside Other - Fonts/ for non-Magic packs). They are not installed automatically — open the folder, select every .ttf/.otf file, right-click and choose Install. Guide: How to install MSE fonts.
Is MSE free and open source?
Yes. Magic Set Editor, created by Twan van Laarhoven, is free software released under the GNU General Public License version 2.0 (GPL-2.0). There is no paid edition and no licence key. Get it from the download page.
Can it make Yu-Gi-Oh! or Pokémon cards?
Yes — through community templates. MSE was designed primarily for Magic: The Gathering, but the community’s Non-Magic packs include frames for other games, and Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokémon are both covered by community template packs. Start at the Templates hub.
