Magic Set Editor Platforms: Where MSE Actually Runs
Magic Set Editor (MSE) is a desktop program, and its platform story is uneven — honestly so, once you look at the actual releases. Windows is its home platform. Linux has one current official channel. Mac has never had an official package at all, and there is no official mobile app. This hub states what exists on each platform, what does not, and where to go next — because most confusion (and most scammy “downloads”) starts with a platform version that was never released.
The four platforms at a glance
- Windows — the home platform. Every MSE release line is a Windows build: the SourceForge 2.0.0 installer (2011), the author’s GitHub 2.1.2 portable zips (2020), and the community’s current 2.5.8 packages. If you are on Windows, start at the download page and pick a version with our version guide.
- Mac — no official native package, ever. No MSE release — SourceForge, GitHub or community — has ever contained a macOS build. The realistic routes are building from source (the README documents a Homebrew + CMake build, with 2020-era tested versions) or running the Windows build in a Wine-class compatibility layer, which is community practice, not an endorsed Mac version.
- Linux — one modern official channel. Flathub carries
io.github.twanvl.MagicSetEditor2at version 2.1.2, the author’s own build lineage — a genuine one-click install. The only native packages before it are SourceForge’s frozen 2011 32-bit tarballs; a source build is the third route. - Chromebook & mobile — no native version, no official app. There is no ChromeOS edition and no official Android or iOS app. Chromebooks can reach MSE only through ChromeOS’s Linux environment running the Flathub build (model permitting); on phones, browser-based card makers are the honest alternative.
Why the versions differ by platform
MSE’s program code is maintained in one place — the author’s repository, last released as 2.1.2 in 2020 — and the fan community distributes its own 2.5.8 Windows packages and keeps the template packs updated (they were still being updated in October 2026). Nobody maintains platform ports: that is why Linux’s best install is a Flatpak packaging of the same 2.1.2, why the Mac instructions in the README date from 2020, and why any site advertising a native “MSE for Mac”, “MSE for Chromebook” or “MSE Android app” download is advertising something the project never made. Get files only from the official and community sources listed on the download page.
A note on templates
Whichever platform you land on, remember MSE’s split personality: the program and its card templates are separate. Program-only builds (the GitHub 2.1.2 zips and the Flathub package) contain no game templates or fonts — you add those from the community template packs, by copying the pack’s data/ folder into the MSE folder and installing its fonts folder. The platform guides below each note how that step works on their system.
