MSE Templates Not Showing After Install

You installed Magic Set Editor, opened it, and there are no card templates to choose from — or the frames you expected are missing. Before assuming the program is broken, know this: for the most common MSE download, an empty template list is the correct, expected result. Here is how to tell which situation you are in.

Cause 1: The 2.1.2 zip contains no templates

The author’s GitHub release 2.1.2 is just the program itself — a portable zip of about 4 MB. It includes no game templates and no fonts. Templates live in separate community template packs, mainly the packs published by the MagicSetEditorPacks organisation on GitHub, such as the Full-Magic-Pack and the M15 packs. If you only downloaded 2.1.2, there is nothing wrong with your install; the second half of it simply has not happened yet. Our step-by-step guide, How to Install MSE Templates, walks through adding a pack.

Cause 2: The pack’s data/ folder did not land in the MSE folder

Template packs install by copying: you take the pack’s data/ folder and copy it into the folder that contains the MSE program, so that data sits alongside the executable. The usual mistakes are all variations on location:

  • The pack was extracted but its data/ was never copied over at all.
  • data/ was copied into a different MSE folder than the one you are launching — easy to do if you have both a 2.1.2 folder and a community bundle on disk.
  • The copy ended up nested — a data folder inside another data folder, or the pack’s outer folder copied instead of its contents — so the program does not find the templates where it looks for them.
  • You are testing the bare 2.1.2 zip while the templates were added to the community bundle, or the other way round.

The reliable test: open the exact folder you launch MSE from and confirm a single data folder sits next to the executable, containing the pack’s template data. Then relaunch the program from that folder and check the template list again. The MSE templates hub explains the pack layout and which pack contains what.

Cause 3: A community bundle, but the wrong variant

The community 2.5.8 downloads on magicseteditor.boards.net come in variants — the standard build with all M15 frames, a Lite build with only set-agnostic frames, an Advanced build with every Magic frame, and a Non-Magic build. If a specific frame is missing but others appear, you may simply have a variant that does not include it. That is a pack-selection question, not an installation failure.

Not missing templates: fonts making cards look wrong

If templates appear but cards render with wrong-looking type, odd spacing or missing symbols, the templates are present — the pack’s fonts are the missing piece. Packs ship a fonts folder (Magic - Fonts/ in the Magic packs, Other - Fonts/ split by game in the Non-Magic pack) whose files must be selected and installed manually. Until they are, MSE falls back to substitute fonts and cards look broken even though nothing is wrong with the templates.

A quick decision order

  • No templates at all, on 2.1.2 — install a template pack; nothing is broken.
  • No templates, pack supposedly installed — verify the data/ location and nesting in the folder you actually launch.
  • Some frames missing — check whether your pack or bundle variant includes them at all.
  • Templates present, cards look garbled — install the pack’s fonts.

If MSE itself fails to start, that is a different problem — see Magic Set Editor Won’t Open or Won’t Save — and if it starts and templates show, you are past installation and into using the editor.
