Magic Set Editor template packs ship their fonts in a separate folder, and Windows does not install them for you. Until you install them by hand, cards will render in a fallback typeface that looks subtly — or completely — wrong. Font installation is a required step of every template install, not an optional polish.
Where the fonts live
In the Magic packs, the folder is called Magic – Fonts. In the Full Non-Magic Pack it is Other – Fonts, organised into subfolders by game. The MagicSetEditorPacks project also maintains a standalone Font-Pack repository, which exists precisely because font installation is a separate step that users miss. Whichever pack you downloaded, the fonts are inside it as individual font files — look for files ending in .ttf or .otf.
Install every font in the folder
- Step 1 — Open the fonts folder that came with your template pack (
Magic - Fonts, or your game’s subfolder insideOther - Fonts). - Step 2 — Select all files in the folder (Ctrl+A). Partial installs are the common mistake: a card uses several fonts across its title, type line and rules text, and each missing one falls back independently.
- Step 3 — Right-click the selection and choose Install. Windows copies the fonts into the system font store, where Magic Set Editor can find them.
- Step 4 — Restart Magic Set Editor if it was open, then reopen your set and compare a card against how it looked before.
We deliberately do not publish a list of font file names here: the packs are updated by their maintainers and file names should be taken from the folder you actually downloaded, not from a web page that may be older than your pack. What matters is the rule — everything in the folder gets installed.
Symptoms of missing fonts
- Card titles or rules text appear in a generic system typeface instead of the card face’s usual lettering.
- Text spacing looks off — letters too wide, too narrow, or overflowing their text box — because the fallback font has different metrics.
- Some parts of the card look right and others do not: that is the signature of a partial install, where only some of the pack’s fonts were installed.
- Symbols or special characters render as boxes or blanks, because the glyph lives in a font that was never installed.
If you recognise any of these, do not reinstall the program or the templates. Go back to the fonts folder, select all, and install again — then restart the editor. The full context of where fonts fit in the install sequence is in our template installation guide and the templates hub.
Fonts are per-pack, not per-program
Because fonts come with each template pack, adding a new pack later — for a new frame or a different game — can mean a second trip to a fonts folder. Treat ‘new pack, check its fonts folder’ as a habit and font problems mostly disappear.
