Short answer: there is no official Magic Set Editor app for Android or iOS — not from the author, not from SourceForge, and not from the community that maintains MSE today. MSE is a desktop program. This page explains why the app-store lookalikes and download statistics do not change that, and what to use on a phone instead.

Why “MSE for Android” claims do not hold up

Every genuine MSE release is a desktop file: the SourceForge 2.0.0 Windows installer and Linux tarballs (2011), the GitHub 2.1.2 Windows zips (2020), and a Linux Flatpak of the same 2.1.2. None of these channels has ever published an .apk, an .ipa, or an app-store listing.

You may see SourceForge’s download statistics cited as proof — the stats do contain a small “Android” figure among the operating systems. That number sits alongside a large “Unknown” category and reflects how download traffic was classified, not the existence of an Android build: there is no Android file in any MSE release for anyone to have downloaded. Likewise, an app in a store using the MSE name is not the desktop program ported — at best it is an unrelated card maker borrowing the name, and it will not open your MSE set files.

What actually works on a phone: online card makers

On a phone or tablet, the realistic tool for custom Magic cards is a browser-based card maker. The following were online when checked on 21 October 2026; we list them as they are, without inventing feature comparisons we have not verified:

MTG.Design — a web-based custom card maker, live and operating.

MTG Cardsmith — a web-based custom card maker with a community around it, live and operating.

MTGNexus — a community site whose custom card tools require an account; live and operating, with finer control over card text than simpler makers (per published reviews).

CardConjurer — listed with a warning: the original CardConjurer project was shut down in November 2022 after a cease-and-desist from Wizards of the Coast. A site at the domain is reachable today, but who operates it now, and its relationship to the original project, is not verified — use it knowing that history.

These tools run entirely in the browser, so they work the same on Android, iPhone and iPad. What they are good at is speed: sketch a card idea the moment it occurs to you, share it, get feedback. What they do not replicate is MSE’s desktop workflow — a set file holding hundreds of cards, a statistics window for the whole set, and batch export of every card image at once.

The sensible split: phone for ideas, desktop for sets

On mobile: draft and share individual cards with an online maker above. No install, no fake “MSE app” needed.

On desktop: do the real set work in MSE — Windows natively, Linux via Flathub, Mac via the routes in our Mac guide. Your set lives in a file you control, offline.

Moving between the two: keep your card text and art in a notes or files app you already use, then build the final cards in MSE. There is no shared cloud format between the online makers and MSE, so plain text is the honest bridge.

If a site tries to sell or sideload you a “Magic Set Editor Android app”, close the tab. The program is free, desktop-only, and GPL-2.0 — and on mobile, the browser tools above are the genuine alternative.

Honest answer first: there is no ChromeOS version of Magic Set Editor, and the project has never claimed Chromebook support. MSE is a desktop program for Windows (with a Linux Flatpak of the same codebase). A Chromebook can still get you there in one specific way — through ChromeOS’s built-in Linux environment — and this page explains that path, its limits, and the simpler alternatives.

Why there is no direct install

ChromeOS does not run Windows programs, and Magic Set Editor’s official releases are Windows files (the SourceForge installer and the GitHub zips) plus a Linux Flatpak. There is no .deb aimed at ChromeOS, no Android app, and nothing in the Chrome Web Store from the project. Any listing or video claiming an “official MSE for Chromebook” download is not from the project — the genuine files are the ones on our download page.

The workable path: the Linux environment + Flathub

Many Chromebooks can run Linux applications in ChromeOS’s built-in Linux environment (often called Linux on ChromeOS, or Crostini). Inside that Linux environment, MSE’s official Flatpak —
io.github.twanvl.MagicSetEditor2
, version 2.1.2, the author’s own build lineage — is the package to install, following the same steps as our Linux guide: enable the Linux environment in ChromeOS settings, set up Flatpak inside it, then install MSE from Flathub.

Read the limits before you rely on this. We describe this as a general path, and we have not tested it model by model: whether your Chromebook offers the Linux environment at all depends on the device, and school- or work-managed Chromebooks often have it disabled by the administrator. Linux apps on ChromeOS also live in their own container, so file access and performance vary. If the Linux environment is unavailable on your machine, this path is closed — there is no fallback install.

One more expectation to set: the Flatpak is the program only. Card templates come separately from the community template packs, and you will be copying the pack’s
data/
folder into the MSE folder inside the Linux environment, which is fiddlier than on a regular PC. Budget a little patience for that step.

The simpler alternatives

Use a Windows or Linux computer for MSE. If you have access to one, it is the program’s home ground: full template packs, fonts and batch export with no container in between.

Use an online card maker in the Chrome browser. For drafting individual cards, a web tool needs no Linux environment and no install. Our mobile and online alternatives guide lists the online card makers that were live when we checked, with honest notes on each.

So: Chromebook owners are not locked out of custom card design — but be clear-eyed that MSE itself reaches a Chromebook only through the Linux container, on the models that allow it. That is a workaround with real limits, not official Chromebook support.

Linux is the one non-Windows platform where Magic Set Editor has a genuine, current, one-click install: Flathub. This page covers that official Flatpak channel, the long-frozen 2011 Linux package from SourceForge for completeness, and the source build the author’s README documents.

The modern route: Flathub (version 2.1.2)

The application
io.github.twanvl.MagicSetEditor2
on Flathub is published under the author’s name, is licensed GPL-2.0, and its listed release is 2.1.2 — the same version as the author’s final GitHub release in 2020. That makes Flathub the current official one-click channel for Linux: no compiling, and the Flatpak keeps the program’s older dependencies (wxWidgets, boost, hunspell) contained.

Install it from our Flathub link: Magic Set Editor on Flathub, or from your distribution’s software centre if it has Flathub enabled. One honest caveat: 2.1.2 is a program-only release. It ships no game templates and no fonts, so after installing you still need a community template pack — copy the pack’s
data/
folder into the MSE folder your Flatpak setup exposes, and install the pack’s fonts folder, exactly as you would on Windows.

The historical route: the 2011 SourceForge tarballs (frozen)

SourceForge’s classic 2.0.0 release (5 February 2011) did include native Linux packages — 32-bit tarballs that have not been touched since:

mse-linux32-2011-02-05-full.tar.gz
— 49,073,857 bytes, MD5
5b8144c7ab1a2d4747907e7a4de87bf8
(SourceForge RSS).

mse-linux32-2011-02-05-reduced.tar.gz
— 12,965,354 bytes, MD5
36de5b7591755eb71c172bf15fb23669
(SourceForge RSS). The reduced build carries fewer bundled components than the full build.

We list these for the record — and so you can verify a file if you already have one — not as a recommendation. They are 32-bit builds of a 2011 program; on a modern 64-bit distribution the Flathub package is the sensible install, and the tarballs are best left to retro setups and archivists.

The DIY route: build from source

The author’s README gives a “Building on linux” section. On a Debian-based system it installs the compiler and the development libraries MSE needs (wxWidgets at 3.0 or later, boost, hunspell) like this:

sudo apt install g++
sudo apt install libboost-dev libwxgtk3.0-gtk3-dev libhunspell-dev

It then builds with CMake (a Release build by default; the README notes
CMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Debug
for a debug build). As on every platform, the source is the author’s repository, github.com/twanvl/MagicSetEditor2, and upstream has been quiet since the 2.1.2 release — the Flathub package exists precisely so most users never have to do this.

Which Linux route should you pick?

Most users: Flathub 2.1.2, then add a template pack. It is the only maintained-style install and the version matches the author’s last release.

Tinkerers and packagers: the source build, accepting that you are compiling a 2020 codebase against today’s libraries.

Nobody, practically: the 2011 tarballs, unless you are deliberately running period software.

Not sure which MSE version line you want in the first place — 2.0.0, 2.1.2 or the community’s 2.5.8? Start with which Magic Set Editor version to download, then come back here for the Linux install.

Short answer first: there has never been an official native Magic Set Editor package for macOS. Not from the original author, not from SourceForge, and not from the community that maintains the program today. If a site offers you a “Magic Set Editor for Mac” download as a ready-made .dmg or .app, that file did not come from the project — be careful with it. This page explains what the official releases actually contain, and the two realistic routes Mac users have: building the program from source, or running the Windows build through a compatibility layer.

The evidence: no Mac package in any official release

Magic Set Editor (MSE) is the free, GPL-2.0 card designer by Twan van Laarhoven. Its releases exist on three lines, and none of them has ever shipped a Mac build:

SourceForge 2.0.0 (2011) — the classic release ships a Windows installer (
mse-win32-2011-02-05-full.exe
) and 32-bit Linux tarballs. There is no Mac file in the release.

GitHub 2.1.2 (2020) — the author’s own repository, github.com/twanvl/MagicSetEditor2, offers only
magicseteditor-2.1.2-win64.zip
and
magicseteditor-2.1.2-win32.zip
. Again, no Mac asset.

Community 2.5.8 — the fan community’s current distribution via magicseteditor.boards.net is likewise a Windows program plus template packs.

SourceForge’s own download statistics tell the same story from the other side: out of 1,815,837 total downloads recorded by SourceForge, Windows accounts for 1,209,271 and Macintosh for 37,510 — a small share, and those Mac-classified downloads were of the Windows/Linux files, not of a Mac edition that does not exist.

Option 1 — Build it from source (the route the README documents)

The author’s README contains a “Building on Mac” section, which is the closest thing to an official Mac route. MSE is written in C++ and depends on wxWidgets 3.0 or later, boost and hunspell. The README installs those dependencies with Homebrew and builds with CMake:

brew install boost wxwidgets hunspell

Then, in the source folder, the README’s build sequence is:

mkdir build && cd build
cmake -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release ..
cmake --build ..

Afterwards the README asks you to copy the program’s
resource
folder into a
SharedSupport
directory next to the executable and run it from there. Read the age warning before you start: the README notes its tested environment as boost 1.72.0, wxmac (wxWidgets) 3.0.5.1 and hunspell 1.7.0 — versions from 2020. Current Homebrew will give you much newer libraries, so treat this as a documented starting point that may need adjustments on a modern Mac, not as a guaranteed one-command install. The upstream program itself has not had a release since 2.1.2 in 2020, so nobody is updating these instructions.

Option 2 — Run the Windows build in a compatibility layer

The route most Mac users actually take is simpler: download a Windows build of MSE — the community 2.5.8 package or the GitHub 2.1.2 zip — and run it through a Wine-class compatibility layer (Wine itself, or tools built on it). Be clear about the status of this option: it is established community practice, not an officially endorsed Mac version. The project does not test, certify or support any specific compatibility tool or version, and this site does not either — whether a given layer runs MSE well depends on the tool and on your version of macOS.

Two practical notes if you go this way. First, get the Windows program itself only from the sources on our download page. Second, MSE is a portable-style program once extracted: keep its folder somewhere your user account can write to, and remember that the program zip alone contains no card templates — templates come from the community template packs.

Option 3 — Skip the desktop program on the Mac

If you only need to draft a card or two and neither route above appeals, a browser-based card maker needs no installation at all and works the same on a Mac as anywhere else. Our guide to Magic Set Editor on Android and mobile lists the online alternatives that were live when we checked — the same list applies on macOS. The trade-off is real, though: online tools are built for quick single cards, while MSE’s strength is managing a whole set offline, with statistics and batch export.

Whichever route you choose, do not pay for a “Mac edition” and do not disable macOS security protections for an unsigned MSE download from a random file host. The genuine program is free, and its genuine releases are the Windows and Linux files described above.
